Big Five – Leo (2nd) – 2019

The second edition of the new series “The Big Five” of the South African Mint is dedicated to the king of the animals: the lion. The so-called “Big 5” include elephants, lions, buffalo, rhinoceros and leopards, all of which are emblematic of the South African fauna. These great animals have been used in the South African banknote sector since 1988 and are therefore closely linked to the African currency. The motif of the coin shows an impressive lion head. The reverse of the coin shows two halves of a lion portrait. If you place two of these coins next to each other, you get a full close-up portrait of a lion. If several of these coins are placed side by side, a whole pride of lions can be seen.
